Help support Parks and Recreation in their mission to enhance the quality of life for all through the stewardship of public land and parks and to provide quality recreational experiences. The hiring amount for this position is between $25.00 and $36.00 an hour. Offer is dependent on qualifications, course type, and internal equity. This is a non-exempt, temporary (variable/limited-hour) position, and is not eligible for city benefits.

This position is responsible for planning, instructing and supervising a specialized class or program that requires unique skills, abilities and/or experiences and may require one or more types of certification. Examples of instruction include but are not limited to: music, arts and crafts, gymnastics, dance, outdoor adventure, environmental education, personal enhancements, hobbies, etc. Instruction may target individuals or groups across the age and ability spectrum.

Classes are self-supporting, and funding comes from participant fees. Scheduling and hours of work vary. If you have skills and experience to share and would like to teach a class at a City recreation center, please apply and detail your qualifications, and your concept can be considered. Primarily and most frequently, work is performed under direct supervision within one functional area and of a routine nature. Reports to an Operations Specialist II or IV.

Education, Experience and Skills

Minimum Requirements: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of professional behavior in a recreation environment; ability to maintain order among participants; ability to instruct participants with different learning styles; ability to demonstrate positive customer service skills when communicating with participants, parents and staff; strong safety orientation; ability to think independently and develop routines for teaching specific classes.

Physical Conditions & Additional Information

Physical requirements of this position as outlined by the Department of Labor:
MEDIUM: work involves exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, or an amount greater than negligible and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

This position may be required to work weekends, nights and/or holidays. This is a safety sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing for pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident and random testing.

Dependent upon assignment, a majority of time spent in this position involves outside work which may involve extreme temperatures, extreme brightness, chemicals/hazardous waste, blood-borne pathogens and/or infectious bacteria. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
