1898 & Co., a division of Burns & McDonnell, is seeking experienced Transmission Planning Consultants to support our growing nationwide consulting practice. We are hiring across multiple experience levels for technically driven professionals who are passionate about power system analysis, grid reliability, and helping clients navigate the rapidly evolving energy landscape.

Transmission Planning Consultants serve as trusted technical advisors, applying advanced engineering and analytical expertise to evaluate grid performance and develop solutions addressing generation retirements, renewable integration, congestion management, and regulatory compliance. This role offers the opportunity to deepen technical specialization while working alongside project managers, clients, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver impactful, data-driven consulting solutions.

What You'll Do

  • Perform a wide range of transmission planning and operational studies, including power flow, transient stability, transfer capability, short-circuit, voltage and reactive analysis, harmonics, EMT studies, reliability assessments, and production cost modeling.
  • Execute transmission planning studies independently using industry-standard tools such as PSS®E, PSLF, PSCAD, EMTP/ATP, SKM, ETAP, and PROMOD.
  • Evaluate compliance with NERC, FERC, and regional (RTO/ISO) requirements, including TPL standards and generator interconnection processes.
  • Apply engineering, economic, and financial analysis to assess system performance, risks, and life-cycle costs.
  • Develop clear, concise technical reports and client-facing presentations summarizing study results and recommendations.
  • Develops client presentations, engineering reviews, financial analysis, and contract administration for the design/planning of utility systems.
  • Conducts technical and business-related risk assessments that evaluate impacts associated with rules implemented by regulatory agencies.
  • Performs independent evaluation, selection, adaptation, and modification of standard engineering techniques for electric transmission system planning procedures and criteria.
  • Conducts data analysis and interpretation of engineering, financial, and economic conditions and results, and subsequent technical business implications to client projects.
  • Analyzes life-cycle costs by developing and incorporating technical assumptions regarding capital costs, operation and maintenance costs, performance estimates, and economic assumptions and forecasts.
  • Support project managers with technical execution, client deliverables, and proposal development.
  • Collaborate across internal practices and support other business lines as client needs require.
  • Mentor junior staff and contribute to the continuous improvement of technical methodologies.

Ideal Background

  • Proven experience in transmission planning, power system analysis, or electric utility consulting.
  • Strong technical aptitude and interest in advancing as a subject matter expert.
  • Experience working with utilities, ISOs/RTOs, or consulting organizations.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills.
