Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Insight Tax Advisors is a specialized outsourced tax compliance practice built for large-scale short-term rental and lodging operators. They are seeking a Senior Tax Associate to own multi-state sales, use, and transient lodging tax compliance engagements end-to-end, handling large data sets and ensuring accurate returns.
Responsibilities
- Build returns from transaction data. Proration, fee inclusion, base derivation, and jurisdiction sourcing are the daily work
- Own hotel and lodging tax specifically: occupancy and transient excise, tourism and CVB assessments, special-district fees, and the state plus county plus local layers that come with them
- Work large data sets as a normal starting point. Airbnb, Vrbo, and Booking payout files, plus ERP and PMS exports. You clean them, reconcile them, and tie them out, and automate where you can
- Reconcile collected versus expected, investigate variances, and reach for "is the base wrong?" before assuming under-collection
- Use AI tools to move faster and cleaner. We build AI into our workflow for data cleanup, research summarization, and drafting. We want someone eager to make these tools part of their work product, not someone we have to drag into them
- Troubleshoot and own issues to resolution. When something does not tie, you dig in, flag it, and drive it to a clean answer rather than filing around it
- Document clearly. Assumptions noted, sources cited, workpapers structured so review is fast
- Follow up on notices and resolve all outstanding issues with tax jurisdictions
Skills
- 3+ years in sales and use and/or transient lodging and occupancy tax compliance, multi-state. Comfortable with state, county, and local layers, though the manager sets the positions
- Strong Excel. SUMIFS, lookups, multi-tab workpapers, and cleaning messy exports. This is the core daily skill and the sharpest screen at this level
- Reconciliation experience. Collected versus expected, tie-outs, and variance investigation
- Ability to build a return from transaction data, including proration, fee inclusion, and base derivation. Coachable here is fine. Totally new to it is not
- Proven track record with large data sets. You are comfortable at volume and do not get lost in it
- Attention to detail and clean documentation so a manager can review quickly
- Comfort following a process with checkpoints, being reviewed, and iterating
- Able to communicate directly with clients to resolve outstanding issues
- Hospitality, STR, or hotel tax specifically. Occupancy excise, tourism and CVB assessments, special-district fees. Realistic to train if the sales and use foundation is strong
- Exposure to marketplace facilitator rules in lodging tax, enough to understand the concept. The manager owns how it applies per platform and state
- PMS or OTA data familiarity (Guesty, Track, Hostaway, Streamline)
- Jurisdiction and rate research. You can look up a rate or ordinance and summarize it
- Registration and licensing mechanics. Certificates, account setup, portals, FEIN and entity matching
